 Тема: "Alternative energy sources"

We all know that modern ecology remains wanting that’s why we need to find alternative energy sources so that to reduce the harm that we do to our planet and economize current energy.

One of the most popular alternative energy sources is wind energy. It has many benefits similar to those of fuel, however, it is renewable and no waste is produced. There are millions of wind energy installations all over the world already, nevertheless, nations still invest in this sphere to develop its technology.

However, even this type of energy has some disadvantages. For instance, wind turbines might be dangerous for some forms of wildlife.

Natural gas has been used as an alternative source of energy for several decades already. It is currently used in cars to reduce carbon emissions. However, natural gas produces greenhouse gases even though the amount of them is less than from other kinds of fuel. 

Energy from waves is not well-known among ordinary people but it proves another water benefit. This source of energy produces no waste and has a huge potential if used accurately. Nevertheless, wave energy is still not studied well enough so this source of energy is to be developed. 

Hydroelectric energy appeared much earlier than other alternative sources of energy. It is renewable and extremely clean which means it does not pollute the air. There are also some unobvious but important benefits like flood control which is also provided by hydroelectric energy.

Humans and the nature have been closely connected since the ancient times. We use generous gifts that are given to us by fertile ground, we mine valuable minerals, drink purified fresh water and simply enjoy the beauty of pine forests and mountain landscapes. The nature gives us a feeling of harmony and our life would feel incomplete without it. But it is so hard nowadays to find a green island in the city where you can walk in the tree shades and enjoy fresh air. There are almost no beaches available for swimming in the suburbs. And if you can find one then it is full of trash and dirt. It is said to realize that people are to blame for it. Sometime ago we were cutting down the trees and built cities without even thinking that natural resources are not endless. We used fertile lands year after year till they became plain and then we moved to a new piece of land. We built a lot of factories that pollute the air. We start the fire in the forest and throw away trash in the streets. All of that led to the situation that now our world past praying for. Polluted dying nature is screaming for help. And it is time to listen to this calling! Let’s save the nature and take care of it together! Today the Russian Society of Nature Protection and other similar organizations in our country arrange different events that help to improve the environment. It can be separate collection of waste and rubbish removal by eco-friendly cars. There are also events when people plant new trees or so-called voluntary Saturday work as an example. Every single person’s contribution into the great deal of protecting the nature might be small but yet very important. And if we all do a little something to improve the situation then it might be enough for saving our planet.

DEFORESTATION


Some people’s activities do a lot of harm to the forests. People cut down trees to build houses, roads, factories and plants. Deforestation is a very serious environmental problem.
The world’s great rainforests are all near the equator, in Africa, South America and South-East Asia. These rainforests are homes to millions of kinds of exotic animals, birds, reptiles, insects, strange plants and beautiful flowers. Three quarters of the world’s species live in the rainforests. If we destroy their habitat many of them will not survive.
Amazon rainforest is the biggest and most important in South America. Scientists believe that plants from the forest could give us many important new medicines such as cures for cancer and AIDS.
The rainforests also help to reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere and affect the weather around the world. Without rainforests our planet might not survive.
People know it but continue to destroy rainforests every day. Logging companies cut down trees to sell the wood, farmers clear the land to grow food crops, people build towns and roads where the forest used to be. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result, a number of rivers and lakes dry up, some rare species of animals, fish, birds and plants disappear forever.
People should take measures to reduce the amount of deforestation and protect the flora and fauna of the rainforest. Our planet is our home and we need to protect it.

1. Прочтите текст, выпишите незнакомые слова в словари, переведите, подготовьтесь к устному пересказу:


    Every year the number of endangered species steadily grows. It would be good to define what the community of endangered species is. It is a population of organisms which is at risk of becoming extinct. More than 40 percent of all organisms are likely to become extinct soon, which is unbelievable. Some of them are simply few in numbers, some are threatened by changing environment. In most cases animal extinction, as well as other natural calamities, is a result of human actions. Many habitats are being destroyed around the world. It seems that endangered wildlife is everywhere around us. To think only that these cute little polar bears at the zoo are gradually going to become extinct. Human activity has strong influence on the process of animal extinction. People chop down numerous forests, leaving certain species without shelter and their natural habitat. They also build newer and newer factories, which release chemical wastes into ocean water. As a result, thousands of sea animal die out. Moreover, people often overexploit animals, buying and selling their valuable parts, such as skin, teeth, fat, tusks. Domestic animals are also badly treated. If people continue treating our environment in such way, we will soon be trapped in ecological disaster. There are many reasons for rare species’ conservation. Firstly, they have aesthetic value. Secondly, they are useful from medical point of view. And, finally, the ecology of our planet literally depends on them.
